Cornwall Rivers Project secures funds for a one year extension

Owing to the measured success of the Cornwall Rivers Project, the Trust has successfully secured funds for a one year extension, which will now run until the end of 2005. Five further catchments have been added to the original areas of coverage; they are the Gannel, Menalhyl, White, Mevagissey and Caerhays Rivers and were targeted owing to concerns over the decline in the resident fish populations.

Farmers and landowners will be targeted in these catchments initially in order to gain an intensive coverage and bring about maximum possible improvements to the streams and beaches. Land managers in the original catchments radiating off Bodmin Moor will still be eligible for grant assisted improvement works, and where they have not been visited previously, they may also receive a free and confidential farm visit and either appropriate Information sheets or a personal Integrated River Basin Management Plan.

In addition, this one year project extension will place a greater emphasis on education, with 2 dedicated education officers in post to cover schools visits and development of the Trust’s vocational training program.
