JOB DESCRIPTION – SENIOR ECOLOGIST


Tamar Consulting is the trading name of Westcountry Rivers Ltd. established in 1995 as the commercial arm of the Westcountry Rivers Trust (Charity No. 1045806). We are a multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy specialising in providing a wide range of ecological services as well as market/social survey research to a broad client base, including local government and government agencies, private companies and conservation organisations.

We already have good general skills in marine and freshwater ecology, botany and fisheries science. We are seeking a highly motivated and self-sufficient go-getter to take a senior role within our friendly ecological team and continue to deliver the high standards with which the consultancy is associated. The post will initially be for 1 year, with a 6 week trial period, although it should become permanent for the right candidate. Extensive in-house training and CPD will be provided. Tamar Consulting is an equal opportunities employer. Your role will be servicing existing commercial contracts, generating new commercial work and providing ecological training to Cornwall Rivers Project advisors (Objective One EAGGF). The starting salary will be between £18,000 and £22,000 per annum.

The following skills/experience are essential :-

• At least 3 years commercial experience working for an ecological consultancy after first degree, including contract management, client liaison and writing tenders.
• Specialism in Protected Species work (preferably EN Bat Licence Holder) or Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
• Excellent report writing and organisational skills
• Good working knowledge of ecological impact assessments (IEEM guidelines)
• Competent in Phase 1 habitat survey and interpretation
• Good working knowledge of GIS

The following skills/experience are desirable :-

• Other specialist knowledge such as freshwater benthic macro-invertebrate identification, breeding bird survey and census techniques, marine biotope surveys, National Vegetation Classification
• Knowledge of nature conservation and planning legislation, DEFRA and EN licence requirements
• Full member of IEEM (or eligible to become so)
