The Westcountry
Rivers Trust is pleased to offer a programme of
high quality, intensive one- to three-day courses
providing Continued Professional Development (CPD).
The courses are suitable for planning officers,
school teachers, environmental organisation staff,
countryside project officers, national park staff,
rivers trust staff as well as anyone with an interest
in the ecology and management of waterways.
One day courses
usually run from 9:30 or 10:00 am to 4:30 or 5:00
pm; two and three day courses typically run from
9:30 am to 9:00 pm on the first (and subsequent)
day(s); 9:30 am to 4:30 pm on the last day. Each
training course usually accepts between 12 –
18 participants. Places are allocated on a first
come, first served basis, therefore, early booking
is advisable. Certificates of attendance are provided
for each course

CPD01
- RUNNING PRIMARY SCHOOL RIVER SESSIONS

A one-day course providing the necessary skills
to run a water-wise session that covers aspects
from both the Geography and Science KS 1 and 2.
The course includes an invertebrate identification
workshop, water-wise activities, environment exploration
games, risk assessment issues and running river/pond
field trips. There will be an opportunity to purchase
a discounted set of river dipping equipment and
the assistance of a WRT advisor on your first river
event.

- RUNNING IN-HOUSE RIVERS ADVISOR TRAINING

An intensive three-day residential course providing
the necessary skills to run in-house training sessions.
The course is designed for emergent Trusts who wish
to train their own advisors and gives an overview
to Sustainable River Basin Management and writing
Integrated River Basin Resource Management plans.
The course also provides the teaching and training
skills necessary to create interesting and effective
ways to transfer knowledge to in-house staff. Through
the course and continued contact with the Westcountry
Rivers Trust subsequent tailored training sessions
can be organised if required.

- THE WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE: WHAT IT MEANS FOR
YOU

An intensive one-day course explaining the up and
coming Water Framework Directive (WFD), including
how it will look, how it will be implemented and
most importantly how it will impact on businesses,
planning and catchment management. This course is
advisable for anyone working within catchment or
water resource management as well as local and regional
planners. The Westcountry Rivers Trust has seen
the WFD development over past years and has been
involved in national workgroups.

- GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN CATCHMENT
MANAGEMENT

A one-day course highlighting the use of Geographical
Information Systems (GIS) in modelling the catchment
thus providing a future management tool. The course
is suited to those interested in using GIS to highlight
high-risk areas within a catchment. The course details
several effective examples where GIS has been used
to target habitat management and river basin management
advice.

- SOCIAL SURVEYING TECHNIQUES AND PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
METHODOLOGIES

A one-day course reviewing the techniques used to
survey public opinion and participation in order
to gather information. The courses highlights examples
used by consultancies and those used to canvass
opinion for the up an coming Water Framework Directive.
